I thought I would take a moment to show you my essentials when packing to go home for the holidays. Anyone that knows me, knows that packing/styling is my jam. I turn on music, light candles, and go to town pulling items from my closet onto my bed. Here are my no-brainer must-haves when traveling during the winter.
The velvet shorts, paired with black opaque tights, can be worn out with friends or even to a family gathering depending on the top. Whenever I'm wearing a neutral outfit with no patterns, I try to add patterns back in using accessories. This scarf is perfect to brighten up darker pieces. This knit beanie is my holy grail, cold weather hat. It goes with everything and keeps my hair hidden on lazy days when needed.
When traveling, I go for purses that are mid-sized and neutral. This one has lots of pockets for my phone, camera, and lipsticks with enough room for my wallet and won't weigh me down when out and about with the family. Finally, boots that are durable and comfy are a must in the winter. This pair will hold up between events and also look great with a slight heel and layered buckles.

I was going to wait to post these until we had our Christmas cards sent out, but it looks like we won't be getting them in until the 17th possibly and I just can't wait that long. This is our second Christmas as a married couple and we didn't do cards last year, which I regret. I'll blame it on being a full-time student back then. These are quite special to me as they were taken at my parents' home up north on Thanksgiving. It was definitely a family effort as my mom and sister's boyfriend helped with setup, we used my dad's gear, and my sister took the photos, so beautifully I have to add. Thank you for running around in the cold and snow with us, you all!

Here are some of my favorite photos I've posted on Instagram within the last month. I've been obsessed with soaking up the creativity and talent I find in the feeds I'm following and love how those people push me to shoot and post more.
I never realized how much the people you follow on social media impact your mood, inspiration, and outlook until lately. My cousin caught me scrolling through my Instagram feed at Thanksgiving (oops) and asked who I follow and if I know them personally.
"Nope, not all of them. They just post awesome-sauce photos."

grat·i·tude
noun
1. the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.
Thanksgiving is upon us already and every year, I take some time to reflect. I love the second part of the definition above because it turns gratitude from a passive thought or feeling to an action. SHOW your gratitude. Some food for thought...
I am so grateful for another year to celebrate with family. I feel that I'm becoming more aware of time passing quickly as I grow older and want to make sure I make the most of it!
What are you grateful for this year? What makes you grateful on an everyday basis? I'd love to see your replies in the comments below!
Wishing you a wonderful happy Thanksgiving,
Beth

I love libraries. So much that I wrote about it. Growing up, my mother would take us kids to the library at least once a week...sometimes 4 times a week. We certainly took advantage going through more books and movies than your grandma has in her lifetime. I think that's where it all started. Thanks, Mom! Now here's why you should show your library some love:
1. You can explore your interests for free
With a library card in your possession, you not only have access to thousands of books, but also magazines, newspapers, DVDs, music or books on CD, the internet, sheet music, and more. You also have opportunities to attend free classes ranging in topics from language to computers to yoga. All for free.99
2. Libraries foster community development
Walk into your public library and you'll be surrounded by people of all ages and backgrounds. Libraries are places where people come to know themselves and their communities.
3. Libraries are culturally relevant architectural structures
Library buildings are rich in symbolism, whether they are architecturally grand or the simplest of rooms tucked into a city government building. They communicate to the public our underlying values: that libraries, information, and shared community space matter.
4. Access to the arts for all
Despite the rising costs of concerts and theater tickets, public library events are often offered free of charge. Many libraries showcase art, which provide access to non-mainstream points of view and give voice to local artists.
5. Librarians rock at their job
Often over-looked, but a valuable resource are librarians. Full of knowledge and willing to help, librarians are trained to research and help readers locate items on a shelf and within databases.
6. Libraries serve as the "people's university"
Libraries are still the authority for reference material, as much as people think Wikipedia is a source for factual information. In a time when education is increasingly expensive, public libraries provide information and educational opportunities for all people, regardless of socioeconomic status.
7. Utilize online databases for free
Sounds boring, but access to subscription databases where you can locate peer-reviewed journals, encyclopedias, and other resources are priceless when you're a student. And I thought I would never use EBSCOhost again...
8. Learn how to create your own content
Increasing numbers of libraries provide spaces and services that meet the needs of people who want to learn how to set up blogs or podcasts, create their own zines, and so much more.
9. Career resources
Libraries have a host of career and job-search materials, sponsor presentations from human resources experts, and offer help filling out online applications.
10. Buy cheap books & music during used book sales
Now that you've had the chance to discover your favorite author by checking out free material, you can snatch up your favorite book that you'd love to own at your library's used book sale.
I can't wait to pass this tradition on to my own kids someday. If you have anything to add to my list, leave a comment below!
oliver & i recently went to explore our newly renovated public library in downtown madison, wi. we hadn't been there in over a year since moving to a different part of the city and frankly, there wasn't much to draw us due to the condition of the building interior and lack of interest.
can i formally apologize to this dear place? is it possible to offer an olive branch to a building?
well, if occupying it with myself, my thoughts, and cup of coffee is a place to start, then you can expect to see me around more often. i might have to become a morning person in order to claim a window seat though. apparently everyone else in the city is apologizing too.
with not only a revitalized interior, the new madison public library offers a fresh selection of events and courses centered around the arts, media, and education. i could write a 25 page paper on it, but you'll never get the full effect without paying a visit yourself. bonus tip: guys, take your woman on a coffee date here and explore. you're welcome.
